Blog lesson

I would like to use blogging in my second grade class to keep in touch with my students while having a student teacher next year. I plan to model using a blog and the proper way to respond to a post. After we have explored this process a few times, I will post questions to my students about the content areas that my student teacher will be instructing. During their computer time, it will be their assignment to check the blog and post answers to my questions. This will be a way for me to maintain knowledge of student progress and needs.

  1. I think that using your blog as a tool to check understanding is a great idea. I would have never thought of that idea while having a student teacher. My school constantly brings in student teachers and interns and this would be a great use of the technology. Do you foresee any issues with second graders being able to navigate the using of a blog site?

  2. I agree with Amanda that I had never thought of using a blog to check in while a student teacher was in the room. Do you have access to computers in the classroom for computer time or do they students have to go to a lab? I do think it is a great idea but wondered do you think the second graders will have trouble focusing on completing their thoughts on the computer. I have a rising 3rd grader and she is still pretty sketchy when it comes to focusing on much more than games or skill building activities on the computer. Perhaps I need to be working with her more on those skills I do not think she has ever done wordprocessing.
Do you work on that with your students already?

  3. I have four lap tops in my room and we get an hour with the mobile lab a week. I think that as long as my students were supervised during their blog lesson time that they would be able to complete it. It will take a lot of modeling and repetition of the steps to complete the lesson, but I think it is manageable. Currently, we work on wordprocessing quite a bit and make class makes a powerpoint every quarter. My current concern is the firewalls that my district has that blocks blogs. All teachers have their own websites for their class through the district and I think that there is a blog program with that. But this is something that I will need to look into. Otherwise, I probably won't be able to blog with my students.
